Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park, Experience the magic of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Uganda’s most famous and rewarding destinations. This ancient rainforest is world-renowned for hosting nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. A visit here offers one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth — coming face-to-face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Rent a reliable 4×4 car and quality camping gear from us and embark on an unforgettable self-drive gorilla safari to Bwindi. Located in the lush, mountainous southwestern corner of Uganda, the park is approximately 8–9 hours’ drive from Kampala (about 500 km). The journey takes you through scenic landscapes, making the trip part of the adventure.
Gorilla trekking is the main reason travelers come to Bwindi. Each day, only 8 visitors per gorilla group are allowed, making the experience exclusive and intimate.
How It Works Your day starts early with a briefing from experienced park rangers who explain the rules and gorilla etiquette. You’re then assigned to a habituated gorilla family and set off into the dense forest with a skilled guide and trackers.
The trek can last from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on where the gorillas are. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended as the terrain can be steep and muddy. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend a magical one hour observing, photographing, and connecting with them as they feed, play, and interact.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Cost (2026-2027):
Pro Tip: Consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience (USD 1,500) if you want to spend a full day with a less-habituated group.
The dry seasons (June to August and December to February) are ideal. Trails are drier, trekking is easier, and visibility is better. However, gorilla trekking is available year-round.
