Kibale forest national park, Discover the enchanting Kibale Forest National Park, widely regarded as the Primate Capital of Uganda. This lush tropical rainforest is one of the best places in Africa to track chimpanzees and observe a remarkable diversity of primates in their natural habitat.
Rent a reliable 4×4 car and quality camping gear from us for a flexible self-drive adventure to Kibale. Located in western
Uganda near Fort Portal town (and close to Queen Elizabeth National Park), the park is approximately 5–6 hours’ drive from Kampala. The scenic journey through rolling hills and tea plantations adds to the experience.
Chimpanzee trekking is the park’s flagship activity and a must-do for primate enthusiasts. With a high success rate, guided treks depart daily from the Kanyanchu Visitor Center.
How the Experience Works Your adventure begins in the morning with a briefing from expert ranger guides. You’ll then head into the dense forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. The trek can last from 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the chimps’ movements, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Wear sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing, and carry water.
Once located, you’ll spend a magical one hour observing these intelligent apes — our closest relatives, sharing nearly 98% of our DNA — as they feed, play, groom, and interact. Along the way, you’re likely to spot other primates, colorful birds, and beautiful forest scenery.
Chimpanzee Trekking Permit Cost (2026-2027):
Tip: Book your permit in advance, especially during peak seasons.
The park is accessible year-round, but the dry seasons (December to February and June to September) are ideal. Trails are drier, trekking is easier, and wildlife is more active. Wet seasons bring lush greenery but muddier paths.
