The route takes you through Uganda’s diverse terrain from the rolling hills near Lake Victoria to the misty mountains of the southwest. Covering roughly 450-530 km depending on your exact destination within Bwindi, the drive typically takes 8-10 hours of pure driving time, but plan for 9-12 hours with stops, traffic leaving Kampala, and road conditions. Many travelers break it into two days for comfort and to enjoy en-route attractions.
From Kampala, head southwest on the Kampala-Masaka Road. After crossing the Equator at Kayabwe, continue to Mbarara. From there, proceed to Ntungamo and Kabale. In Kabale, you can head toward Kanungu for Buhoma (northern sector) or other directions for eastern/southern sectors. This route offers good tarmac for much of the way, with about 414 km to Kabale taking 5-8 hours.
A reliable
