You can’t talk about Uganda’s public transport without talking about taxis (locally known as Matatu). These are the main forms of public transport for short-distance travel (Town-to-Town or City-to-City) for the majority of Ugandans. For instance, there are more than 100,000 taxis on the roads of Kampala, Entebbe, and Jinja. Much as these mini-bus taxis aren’t for the faint of heart, they are an important part of Uganda’s public transportation system, especially in Towns and Cities. Depending on the distance, you are likely to pay anywhere between Shs. 1000 and Shs. 10,000. It is however important to note that passengers share rides along predetermined routes, and much as they don’t follow strict schedules, they provide an affordable means of transport.
Boda bodas are also popular throughout Uganda, whether in Urban or Rural areas. These motorbikes are ideal for short trips and are faster. These are also the perfect option for maneuvering through heavy traffic, although are at a higher risk of accidents due to reckless riding.
